What Speed Should You Listen To Audiobooks At?

Most narrators read at about 150–160 words per minute. Comfortable listening for most people tops out around 250–300 wpm, which is roughly 1.6x–1.9x. Practiced speed listeners go higher.

  • 1x–1.25x — dense non-fiction, foreign-language practice, books you want to savor.
  • 1.5x — the sweet spot for most fiction and narrative non-fiction; a 12-hour book becomes 8 hours.
  • 2x — re-listens, slow narrators, light reads.
  • 2.5x+ — skimming. Audible and Spotify go up to 3.5x; Libby goes to 3x.

Tip: raise speed in 0.1x steps over a few days instead of jumping — your ear adapts quickly. Want the same math for a lecture series? Paste it into the YouTube playlist length calculator.
